Wyke Regis is a village
and a parish. It used to be1½ miles south-west from Weymouth but with
modern development the two have now merged together. Wyke Regis is in a
valley facing south-west and has good views of the Isle of Portland and
the Chesil Beach. The church of All Saints is in the Gothic style
and has a tower which is 261 feet above sea level, for many years its
has served as a landmark for vessels passing up and down the
English Channel. The burial ground contains several monuments to
persons who lost their lives at sea. A new area for burials was
purchased in 1888. The registers date from 1676. Belfield House is a notable residence that commands a fine prospect. In 1880 a hospital was erected by the Port of Weymouth Sanitary Authority to accommodate 50 patients. |
|
The torpedo factory in the parish employed 400 people towards the end of the 19th century. A National School was built to accommodate 200 pupils. Within the parish of Wyke Regis is Westham, a suburb of Weymouth, a chapel of ease was erected here in 1880 and St Paul's church was erected in 1895. There was also a non-sectarian Mission Hall. A National School was built in Westham in 1882. In 1891 the population of Wyke Regis was 4182 of which 1409 were in the Weymouth municipal borough. The land area is 2062 acres. |
