Shillingstone is a parish and a village on the River Stour and also on the main road from Sturminster Newton to Blandford. It also had a railway station sited on the Midland and South Westerrn Joint railway. The Church of the Holy Rood is built of stone and has a chancel in the Early English style, a nave, north aisle, south porch and square embattled tower holding 5 bells, one dating from 1622. The church was restored in 1889 when the north aisle was added. The registers date from 1654. |
There was a Wesleyan chapel in the village. In the centre of the village there is an old cross [seen on the left of the adjoining photograph]. There is the remains of another cross in the churchyard and the base of a third on the Blandford road. Whitehill is a hamlet 1 miles south east and Gainscross 2 miles south east. The Church of England School was built in 1855 and enlarged several times. The population in 1891 was 546. |
