Owermoigne

Owermoigne is a small parish 7 miles south-east of Dorchester and 5 miles west of Wool, situated on the main road between the two. At the time of the 1891 census the population was just under 400, in 1991 the population was only a little more at 433.

The church  was rebuilt in stone in 1883, the work being paid for by Rev John Robert Cree former Rector of the parish, who also erected the village school in 1873.

The church is dedicated to St. Michael, the west tower contains three bells, is the only remaining section of the original 15th Century church.

The second part of the name is derived from the family name Moygne or Moigne (from the old French for 'monk')  who held the manor until the 16th century, the first half however is more obscure and there have been several theories as to its origin.
