The Parish of Chideock

Chideock is a pretty village just inland from the south coast and 3½ miles west of Bridport. It now lies on the busy A38 from Dorchester and Bridport to Honiton in Devon and the main street through the village is always full of cars. The smaller hamlet of Seatown lies close to the coast and the dramatic cliffs that are a feature of the coastline. The church of St Giles lies on the main road with its burial ground behind it. 	mortuary chapel in the middle, constructed by the Weld family. The church is of ancient construction and was restored in 1880. The registers date from 1654. The remains of Chideock Castle, the ancient seat of the de Chideocks and the Arundells is in the parish. The area is 2052 acres and flax used to be one of the main crops. Fishing was also important to many inhabitants. The population in 1891 was 633.
