Upwey [or Upway] is at the source of the Rivey Wey in a valley situated above Weymouth. The water source became famous as a wishing well and was very popular in Victorian times when visitors could alight from the train at the Upwey Wishing Well Halt. The church of St Lawrence dates from around 1490. There was a Wesleyan chapel built in the 19th century and a National School was erected in 1840. The population in 1891 was 752 persons. |

Broadwey [or Broadway] is so called because it is situated where the River Wey broadens out below Upwey. The ancient parish church is dedicated to St Nicholas. There was also a Wesleyan Chapel erected in 1839 and a Temperance Hall in 1879, the latter having reading and coffee rooms attached. The parish school dates from 1871. Little Moor is a hamlet within the parish and Nottington hamlet is partly in Buckland Ripers. The land area is 1029 acres [compared to Upway 1785 acres] and the 1891 population was 774 |
