Dorset Online Parish Clerks

Over 1 Million individual records available - Last update 1st April 2008

An Online Parish Clerk (OPC) researches all the available historical data they can find on a parish, records are transcribed, and in order to promote further private research, are made FREELY available to any researcher. This will include census, parish transcripts, bishop's transcripts and churchwardens accounts, overseers accounts, land tax records, postal directory extracts, church & village histories, etc. An OPC is a volunteer and should not be confused with the civil Parish Clerk appointed by a Parish Council.

There are about 275 parishes in Dorset and we have data online for nearly all of them. If you would be interested in volunteering to help make these national records available to all, please click here for more information.

***The OPC email is fixed and you can now contact the OPC's directly again***

INFORMATION FOR RESEARCHERS

VOLUNTEERS

Please note that all OPC's are volunteers, giving their time freely. They cannot always respond instantly, some work full time, computer problems can occur and some even go on holiday! If you have not received a reply within 2 weeks please notify the Coordinator

Volunteers are required to assist in the recording of Monumental Inscriptions. We still have a number of parishes which have not been recorded, or, if you have any records already, then we would be very pleased to receive a copy of them. Contact Mervyn Wright

COURTESY

Common courtesy is obligatory! even a negative response has taken someone's time.

ACCURACY

Most OPC's work on their own and are certainly not infallible! Most of the transcripts have not been validated and the information provided should be taken as a guide only. As with everything found on the internet you should obtain proof from the primary source (in many cases this will be the Dorset History Centre ).

COPYRIGHT

All records have been transcribed so that they are FREELY available to all persons to use for their personal & private research only. They may NOT be used for any commercial purpose.
